Odontomachus brunneusSpecies Introduction
Obligately semi-claustral: a single, newly-mated queen creates a founding chamber and rears the first workers off stored nutrients and metabolized wing muscles, foraging to locate additional food to feed the larvae.
Native range extends from Texas and across the southern gulf states and the Florida Keys. Inhabits a variety of habitats, including forests, upland scrub, and sandhill. Nests under and within rotting wood as well as in leaf littler, bases of trees, and sandy areas. Hunts soft-bodied insects such as termites using highly-adapted, trap-jaw mandibles. Primarily nocturnal but workers may be seen foraging during the day when cloudy or in forested areas. Vigorously defend their nests with powerful stings. Can snap at the ground to propel itself into the air (up to six inches or so) to avoid predation (or foil the best efforts of an ant keeper to collect them). Both the sting and the escape behaviour are husbandry problems, not trivia — see the housing notes.
A challenging and rewarding species, not recommended for beginners. Requires frequent feeding of insect protein, substrate for healthy brood development, and high humidity. Two things set this species apart from anything else in the collection: it stings hard, and it can launch itself clear of an open outworld. Plan containment before the colony arrives.
Formicarium
We recommend using gypsum or substrate-based formicaria that provide high humidity and substrate to enable larvae to spin cocoons. A red plate cover over the nest suits them, and low ambient lighting encourages daytime foraging. Containment is mandatory for this species. Trap-jaw ants can strike the substrate and launch themselves several inches into the air, so the outworld must be lidded — an open-topped arena is not sufficient no matter how tall the walls. Keep a fluon barrier current on every vertical surface, check the seams before opening the setup, and never open the outworld without a barrier in place. They also sting readily in defence of the nest, so do not handle the ants and use an aspirator or a cup rather than fingers.
Water & Humidity
Most of the nest area should stay relatively humid.
Recommended to use TrapJaw Labs PVA sponges for founding due to improved humidity.
Odontomachus rarely utilize liquid feeders. Recommend keeping a moist nest environment and/or provide drinking water in a pebble-filled tray in the foraging area.
Protein
Trap-jaw ants are highly effective predators in the undergrowth, and rapidly process captured arthropods. They require frequent feeding of insect protein.
TrapJaw Labs feeds our Odontomachus colonies with pre-killed Drosophila melanogaster and D. hydei fruit flies, cockroach nymphs, and sliced mealworms. Live worker termites are especially favored by this species.

Carbohydrates
Ample access to carbohydrates (sugars) is important for Odontomachus brunneus. Provide sugar-water in droplets or a slice of washed, organic apple dusted with white sugar.
We recommend providing our Honeydew Honey once a week. It replicates the micronutrient profile of the carbohydrate sources that trap-jaw ants feed on in the wild (aphid honeydew and extrafloral nectar). Please note that honey-water is not suitable for use in liquid feeders and should only be provided in feeding dishes or on top of sliced, organic apple.
Odontomachus rarely utilize liquid feeders.
Maintenance
Weeks 1-3: Settle the founding queen somewhere dark and undisturbed. Stress from disturbance can cause the queen to consume the brood, so keep handling to a minimum. This species is semi-claustral and must be fed — offer small amounts of insect protein, especially once larvae are growing, but deliver food without moving or inspecting the tube. Ensure the colony has substrate in the form of sand or vermiculite so larvae can spin cocoons.
Weeks 4–6: First workers ('nanitics') appear. Offer a small protein item (a few fruit flies or mealworm sections) about twice a week. Population climbs slowly — that's normal.
Months 2+: Maintain humidity. Protein provisioning should be frequent (1-4 times a week depending on consumption). Consider a larger humid nest upgrade and more outworld space as the colony begins to utilize 75% of the nest space.
Diapause is not required for this species.
