Pheidole xerophilaSpecies Introduction

Founding strategy

Claustral. Single queen, sealed founding chamber, no outside food needed for the first generation.

Natural history

Native to the Southwestern US. Small heat-loving seed harvesters similar to Pheidole militicida and barbata, but on a smaller scale. In the wild, these ants will trail goings tens of feet in search of seeds. Distinct dimorphic worker caste: tiny minors handle daily tasks while majors with disproportionate heads help with food-storage, colony defense, and processing food items.

What to expect as a keeper

Fast-growing, very active species with two visible worker castes. These ants have relatively average-sized colonies when compared to some other seed specialists. Colonies and will actively trail out of the nest in search for seeds. Give these ants what they need (seeds), and they will grow accordingly.
