Founding strategy

Budding, not flights. Monomorium pharaonis do not hold nuptial flights at all. Alates mate inside the nest, and new colonies form when a fragment containing queens, workers, and brood splits away from the parent colony. Colonies are therefore established from fragments rather than from a lone founding queen, and there is no claustral stage to wait through.

Natural history

Tropical in origin and now found worldwide, established indoors almost anywhere people keep buildings heated. In temperate regions they cannot survive outside and live entirely within structures. Extremely polygynous: a single colony unit typically holds one to two thousand monomorphic workers alongside fifty to a couple hundred egg-laying queens, and established populations can run far higher. Individual queens are short-lived by ant standards, often under a year, but the colony replaces them continuously and so has no natural end point. Workers are roughly 2mm, pale yellow to light brown with a darker gaster.

What to expect as a keeper

Fascinating to watch and genuinely difficult to contain. Monomorium pharaonis grow explosively, need steady warmth, and never diapause, so they are active year-round. The feeding and housing are straightforward; the containment is not. At roughly 2mm these are among the most escape-prone ants anyone keeps, and a colony loose in a heated building is very hard to remove. Treat the barrier as the main job, not an afterthought.
