Carolina Thief Ants·Section 1 of 7

Solenopsis carolinensisSpecies Introduction

Founding strategy

Claustral. Founding chamber must be very humid. They will found together in groups.

Natural history

Native to the coastal parts of the Southeastern US. Live almost entirely underground in waterlogged soils. Like other thief ants, they tunnel into other ant species' nests and steal their brood to eat. Rarely surface except for nuptial flights.

What to expect as a keeper

They cannot tolerate moderately dry conditions. Get the humidity right and they're rewarding, but let it slip and you'll lose the colony. In captivity, thief ants will forage in the provided outworld.
