Solenopsis carolinensis
Carolina Thief Ants
Solenopsis carolinensis is a thief ant of the molesta complex, described by Forel from Faisons, North Carolina, and recorded spottily from New Jersey and Maryland south through the Carolinas and west into Arkansas and Texas, most of it by accident: berlese samples of hardwood leaf litter, stumps and bark on dead trees, the nests of other ants and of termites, a black light in July. Workers run 1.3 to 1.5 mm, usually concolorous yellow and sometimes brown, the eye reduced to three to five ommatidia, against queens of about 4.1 mm carrying large black eyes and darkly pigmented ocelli; colonies are polygyne.
