Novomessor cockerelli
Novomessor cockerelli
Novomessor cockerelli is a large, long-legged, elongate ant of the rocky soils of the southwestern deserts, the most common Novomessor in New Mexico. It forages early and late, sometimes at night, and all day once the year cools, taking dead and dying insects, plant matter, and seed, and it cannot sting, though it is aggressive enough that the bites tell when enough of them are on you. It also sabotages the competition.
