Aphaenogaster fulva
Tawny Collared Ants
Aphaenogaster fulva is a long-legged tawny ant of mesic eastern forest, from Vermont south into Florida and west to Louisiana and Colorado, nesting in logs and stumps and under stones, and it wears the feature it is named for: a welt thrown up across the front of the mesonotum, standing abruptly above the pronotum and dished in the middle so that from behind it reads as two low tubercles. It is one of the eastern woodland Aphaenogaster, and that genus does most of the seed-carrying in the spring woods. They are also considerable termite predators, should the opportunity present iself.
