Pogonomyrmex maricopa
Maricopa Harvester Ants
Pogonomyrmex maricopa is a seed-harvesting myrmicine of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan desert regions, where colonies build conspicuous cleared discs around a central nest entrance and forage on a diurnal, heat-tolerant schedule. It's best known for having among the most acutely toxic insect venoms ever measured, with a murine LD50 in the neighborhood of 0.1–0.12 mg/kg, driven largely by proteinaceous hemolytic and neurotoxic components rather than the alkaloids seen in Solenopsis. Colonies are monogyne with a single physogastric queen, and founding is fully claustral following late-summer monsoon nuptial flights.
