Solenopsis xyloni Southern Fire Ants
Southern Fire Ants
Solenopsis xyloni is the native fire ant of the southern United States, ranging from the Carolinas west to California and south into northern Mexico, nesting in open soil or under stones and raising loose, untidy craters rather than the dense mounds of its imported relatives. Workers are polymorphic, usually amber across the head and mesosoma against a black gaster though some populations run concolorous dark, and they sting hard but with markedly less appetite for it than Solenopsis invicta (Mackay & Mackay 2002).
