What makes a species Beginner or Intermediate on your site?
They're our rating of how easy a species is to keep.
Beginner species tolerate a range of temperature and humidity, any diapause they need is short and simple to run, and they grow fast enough that you won't grow bored. Pheidole bicarinata is a great example, and Best Beginner Ants? covers it alongside four others.
Intermediate species need more consistent care, usually because of a specific diet or humidity requirement, and they're less forgiving. Florida Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex badius), for example, need lots of protein, and the more often they're fed, the better.
Whichever label a species carries, its care guide lays out what it needs.
