Camponotus discolor
Bicolored Arboreal Carpenter Ants
Camponotus discolor is a small Myrmentoma carpenter ant, 3.5 to 7.5 mm, red across the head, mesosoma, and petiole against a blackish gaster, ranging from Ohio and the Carolinas south to Florida and west to the Dakotas, Kansas, and Texas. It is rarely collected and almost always from natural habitat, nesting like the rest of its subgenus in a wide range of small cavities and forming colonies too few and workers too slight to trouble a house, which sets it apart from the big carpenter ants people know.
