Camponotus decipiens
Deceptive Carpenter Ants
Camponotus decipiens is a small Myrmentoma of the Southeast, 3.5 to 7.5 mm, reddish over the head, mesosoma, legs, and petiole with a black and notably glossy gaster, and it keeps small colonies, a few hundred workers at the outside and often under a hundred. Almost nothing it lives in was made by itself: it moves into the vacated galleries of Colobopsis and other carpenter ants in ash and oak twigs, old gall-wasp chambers, cavities in plant stalks, loose bark, and dry seedpods.
