Camponotus snellingi
Snelling's Carpenter Ants
Camponotus snellingi is a Myrmentoma of the southeastern woods, 3.5 to 8 mm, orangish-red over the head, mesosoma, legs, and petiole, with the first two segments of the gaster that same orange and everything behind them black. It nests in dead twigs and branches, under the bark of living and dead trees, and in partly rotten logs, stumps, and standing snags, and unlike the small-colony carpenter ants it resembles it can grow to thousands of workers, though whether it does depends on who else is in the wood.
