Camponotus chromaiodes Ferruginous Carpenter Ants
Ferruginous Carpenter Ant
Camponotus chromaiodes is the red-bodied carpenter ant of eastern woodland, black in the head and gaster with a deep red mesosoma and legs and a wash of red across the front of the gaster, which is the only reliable thing separating it from Camponotus pennsylvanicus in the field. It nests in and under well-rotted logs and stumps, in standing dead trees, and at the bases of oaks, running its galleries down out of the wood and into the soil beneath, often heavy clay. Where the ground is already warm it takes the warmest chambers on offer (Diamond et al. 2012).
