Forelius pruinosus
High Noon Ants
Forelius pruinosus is a small dolichoderine of open, arid, and broken ground from the southern United States into Mexico and the Caribbean, polygyne, monogyne nesting in bare soil behind untidy little craters and running trunk trails over ground and vegetation for nectar, honeydew, and whatever it can scavenge. It works the shift nothing else will take. On Sonoran barrel cactus the other three ants tending the plants came down in the heat of the day and returned when the surface cooled, while pruinosus never abandoned a plant anywhere in the range recorded, 13.8 to 57°C, and held a lethal threshold of 53.4°C in the lab, more than three degrees clear of the next species (Fitzpatrick et al. 2014).
